Lagos seals site, issues 72-hour demolition ultimatum

The Lagos State Building Control Agency has sealed an ongoing construction project and issued a 72-hour removal notice to another property for alleged violation of building regulations within the Lekki–Ikoyi corridor.

The agency, in a statement shared on its official X handle on Thursday, said its enforcement team sealed a site located on Femi Okunnu Road, Alexander Avenue, after the developers commenced building works without securing the necessary approvals.

LASBCA described the action as part of ongoing efforts to curb the rise of unauthorised developments and ensure safer, well-planned urban growth across the state.

In a related enforcement move, the agency issued a 72-hour ultimatum to QMB Mart to dismantle all structures erected along the Coastal Road and under the powerline route.

The space, according to the government, was originally designated strictly as a parking lot.

Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Abiodun, noted that the area had been converted into commercial use without permission.

“The occupants allegedly turned the space into a commercial hub, setting up a laundromat, clubhouse and eatery without approval,” Abiodun said.

“Development in Lagos must follow due process. Any building erected without approval, or any change in the approved use of government-allocated property, is considered illegal. The state will not allow its master plan to be violated.”

General Manager of LASBCA, Gbaye Florence, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to routine monitoring and strict enforcement to safeguard lives and property.

“Our mandate is to ensure buildings in Lagos are safe and built to global standards,” she said.

“Anyone who puts up structures without approval will be identified, marked, and subjected to enforcement actions.”

LASBCA added that its ongoing enforcement exercise will be extended to all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas, stressing that public cooperation remains key.

“We are deploying officers to monitor construction activities across Lagos. Residents must understand that compliance benefits everyone,” Abiodun added.

The state government maintains that ensuring compliance with building regulations is crucial to preventing disasters and sustaining orderly development.
